In the 2010 United States Senate special election in Delaware, held on November 2, 2010l, Democratic candidate Chris Coons, then New Castle County Executive, faced Republican Christine O'Donnell, a Tea Party-backed candidate who had previously run for the Senate in 2006 and 2008. The seat was vacated by Joe Biden upon his election as Vice President in 2008. In the general election, Coons won decisively, securing 56.61% of the vote to O'Donnell's 40.03%.
