The 2010 New Mexico gubernatorial election was held on November 2, 2010, for an open seat after Democratic Governor Bill Richardson was term-limited and could not seek reelection. Republican Susana Martinez, the district attorney of Doña Ana County, defeated Democratic nominee Diane Denish, winning 53.29% of the vote to Denish’s 46.55%. Martinez’s victory made her the first female governor of New Mexico and the first Hispanic female governor in U.S. history.
