In the December 10 runoff, Republican John Kennedy defeated Democrat Foster Campbell decisively, securing 60.65% of the vote to Campbell’s 39.35%, and thus claimed the open Senate seat. Under Louisiana’s unique “jungle primary” system, Republican John Kennedy led the November 8, 2016, primary with 24.96% of the vote and advanced to a runoff against Democrat Foster Campbell, who had 17.47%.
