In the 2020 North Carolina gubernatorial election held on November 3, Democratic incumbent Roy Cooper was re-elected to a second term, defeating Republican Lieutenant Governor Dan Forest with 51.52% of the vote to Forest's 47.01%. Cooper's victory was notable as he became the first North Carolina governor to win re-election since Mike Easley in 2004, and he was the only Democrat to win a gubernatorial race in a state carried by Donald Trump in the 2020 presidential election.
