The Wire: Democrat Amy Acton won Ohio’s governorship Tuesday, defeating Republican Vivek Ramaswamy 52.3% to 44.4%, a 7.9-point margin that makes her Ohio's first woman elected governor.

Why it counts: Acton flips an office Republicans have held for more than a decade and becomes Ohio’s first Democratic governor since Ted Strickland, who left in 2011. The win was part of a national wave in which Democrats flipped five governorships, all in states President Trump carried in 2024, and it extends the party’s gains into a state that had drifted firmly Republican.

The margin: Acton took 52.3% to Ramaswamy’s 44.4%, with nearly all of the vote counted. The result marked a swing of roughly 19 points from Trump’s double-digit win in Ohio two years ago, among the larger shifts of the night.

The fine print: Acton, a physician who led the Ohio Department of Health early in the pandemic, ran as a public-health and affordability candidate. Ramaswamy, a biotech entrepreneur and former presidential candidate backed by Trump, had cleared the Republican field and entered the race as a national figure with a heavy fundraising profile. Acton succeeds term-limited Republican Gov. Mike DeWine.

On the record: Acton framed the race around the cost of living and competent management of state government, casting herself as a steadying alternative after a turbulent political stretch in Ohio.

The counter: Ramaswamy ran on tax cuts, deregulation, and his outsider business background, and leaned on his national profile and Trump’s endorsement. Republicans had expected Ohio’s recent lean to carry him and were caught off guard by the size of the Democratic turnout.

The backdrop: Ohio had gone two decades without electing a Democratic governor and had backed Trump comfortably in the past three presidential elections, making it an unlikely flip at the start of the cycle. Acton’s win underscored how broadly the political environment turned against Republicans, reaching even into states well outside the traditional battlegrounds.

Looking ahead: Acton will be inaugurated in January. Her victory gives Democrats the governor’s office in a state where they had been shut out of statewide power, reshaping Ohio politics heading into 2028.
