Top Election Developments

A summary of the most significant election news from the week, including major race developments, candidate activity, and changes that may determine upcoming contests.

Military Veteran Alexander Vindman Enters Florida Senate Race - Former Army officer and national security expert Alexander Vindman has entered the 2026 race for Florida’s U.S. Senate seat as a Democrat. Vindman rose to national prominence in 2019 after testifying during Donald Trump’s first impeachment inquiry, stemming from concerns he reported about a phone call between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. His candidacy injects a high-profile national figure into what is expected to be a closely watched contest against Republican U.S Senator Ashley Moody, who was appointed to the seat by Governor Ron DeSantis after Marco Rubio left the U.S. Senate to become U.S. Secretary of State.

Amy Klobuchar Launches Minnesota Gubernatorial Campaign - U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar officially launched her campaign this week for governor of Minnesota, following Governor Tim Walz’s decision to end his reelection campaign earlier this month. Klobuchar enters the contest as the frontrunner, given her statewide name recognition and record of electoral victories. First elected as Hennepin County attorney in 1998, Klobuchar has served in the U.S. Senate since 2007, building a reputation as a pragmatic Democrat with crossover appeal beyond the party’s base. She was most recently reelected in 2024 with 56% of the vote, finishing 6 points ahead of the Democratic presidential nominee, Kamala Harris, in the state.

Eleanor Holmes Norton Not Seeking Reelection - Longtime D.C. Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton announced that she will retire at the end of this term, ending a historic career spanning more than three decades in Congress. Norton has served as D.C.’s non-voting delegate since 1991. Her decision opens the door to a competitive Democratic primary in the heavily Democratic district, with multiple local officials expected to explore bids.

Vern Buchanan Not Seeking Reelection – Republican Vern Buchanan, who has represented Florida’s 16th Congressional District since 2007, announced he will retire at the conclusion of his current term, ending nearly two decades of service in the U.S. House. His departure leaves an open, safely Republican seat and adds to a broader wave of House retirements ahead of the midterms.

Texas 18th Congressional District Special Election Runoff - Voters in Texas' 18th Congressional District will head to the polls on January 31 for a special runoff election to fill the U.S. House seat left vacant after the March 2025 passing of Sylvester Turner. The contest is between two Democrats, Christian Menefee, Harris County Attorney, and Amanda Edwards, former Houston city council member, after neither secured a majority in the November 4, 2025, special election. A December 2025 poll conducted by Lake Research Partners showed Menefee leading Edwards 43% to 30%.

Scott Brown Reports Fourth Quarter Fundraising - New Hampshire Republican U.S. Senate candidate Scott Brown raised $500,000 in the fourth quarter of 2025, with more than $900,000 cash on hand. Brown is in a competitive Republican primary with former New Hampshire U.S. Senator John E. Sununu.

State & Local Spotlight

Coverage of notable state and local election events that may indicate broader political trends or influence higher-profile races.

Minnesota House Returns to Even Split After Special Elections - Democrats won two special elections held in Minnesota on January 27, rebalancing the State House of Representatives to a 67-67 partisan deadlock. In District 64A, Meg Luger-Nikolai secured 95% of the vote against her Republican challenger, while Shelley Buck ran unopposed in District 47A.

Matt Mahan Launches 2026 California Gubernatorial Bid - San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan has entered the race for California governor in 2026 to replace term-limited Governor Gavin Newsom. Mahan, a moderate Democrat, has served as mayor since 2023 and is centering his gubernatorial campaign on tackling homelessness, public safety, housing costs, and the state's fiscal challenges.

Chris Dudley Enters Oregon Governor’s Race - Former NBA player Chris Dudley launched a Republican campaign for governor this week. Dudley previously ran for governor in 2010, narrowly losing the general election to Democrat John Kitzhaber by 2 points. Dudley joins a crowded GOP primary field of contenders vying to unseat incumbent Democratic Governor Tina Kotek.

Virginia Judge Blocks Pro-Democratic Voting Map Push - A Virginia judge blocked Democratic efforts to redraw congressional maps before the 2026 midterms, ruling that lawmakers failed to follow proper constitutional amendment procedures when they passed redistricting measures during a special session while early voting was already underway. Democrats had hoped to implement a more favorable congressional map from the current 6-5 Democratic edge. Virginia Democrats have appealed the ruling, but if it stands, they won't be able to put the redistricting amendment before voters in time to impact the November midterm elections.
