The Wire: Democrat Rob Sand won Iowa’s governorship Tuesday, defeating Republican Zach Lahn 55.4% to 44.5%, an 11-point margin that flips an office Republicans had held since 2011.

Why it counts: Sand becomes Iowa’s first Democratic governor in more than a decade and breaks a long run of Republican control of state government. His win was part of a national wave in which Democrats flipped five governorships, all in states President Trump carried in 2024, and it marked one of the night's sharpest swings in a state that had trended steadily to the right.

The margin: Sand took 55.4% to Lahn’s 44.5%, with nearly all votes counted. The result represented a swing of more than 24 points from Trump’s roughly 13-point win in Iowa two years ago, among the largest shifts anywhere on the map.

The fine print: Sand, the state auditor and for years the only Democrat holding statewide office in Iowa, ran on curbing corporate subsidies and outsourcing and on affordability. The seat opened with the departure of Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds, and Sand’s victory ends unified Republican control of the governor’s office and legislature that had lasted more than a decade.

On the record: Sand built his campaign around accountability and economic fairness, themes he had sharpened over two terms as the state’s auditor, and framed the race as a check on one-party control in Des Moines.

The counter: Lahn ran as a conservative outsider aligned with the national Republican agenda and sought to tie Sand to his party’s leadership in Washington. Republicans had expected Iowa’s recent lean to hold the seat and were caught off guard by the scale of the Democratic turnout.

The backdrop: Iowa had moved from presidential battleground to reliably Republican over the past decade, backing Trump by double digits three times, which made a double-digit Democratic win for governor a striking reversal. Sand’s result tracked the broader collapse in Republican performance well beyond the traditional swing states.

Looking ahead: Sand will be inaugurated in January. His win gives Democrats a foothold in a state where they had been shut out of statewide power, and breaks the Republican trifecta heading into the next cycle.
